Penske Cuts Ties to Smart USA

New York Times reports that Mercedes-Benz USA will assume distribution, marketing, sales and management responsibilities for the Smart brand of micro-cars in the second quarter of 2011. The micro-car was met with initial enthusiasm, but the car has more recently fallen on hard times as consumers opt for roomier-looking, comparably-priced vehicles from other brands. Just 5,927 Smart cars were sold in the U.S. in 2010.
