Going for the wow factor at CES

Scott Friedman says he believed in his product, a small speaker that plugs into smart phones and other devices for high-quality sound, but he knew that getting into national retailers would take time. Instead of knocking on doors individually, he spent $75,000 to exhibit at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. For a two-person company, the show was a huge risk, but Friedman says he made great contacts with RadioShack, Verizon and other big retailers. He'll have to sell "many thousands" of his WOWee speakers to break even, but with more than 700 business cards to follow up on, "it was definitely worth it," he said.
